Michael Egglestone, 52, failed to return to the family holiday villa at Benigembla in the Jalon Valley, Costa Blanca in Spain on June 1 and a rescue search was launched.

Michaels wife said: “Michael went missing on June the 1st 2009 after going for a walk in the mountains, something that he had done each day on the previous of seven days of our holiday with family and friends.“

“Michael is an experienced walker and had with him his usual equipment along with a supply of water.“

Authorities were alerted on the evening of the Monday, June 1st, after Michael failed to return to catch his flight back to the UK with the remainder of his party.

The families are extremely grateful for the help and support that they have received from the authorities both in Spain and here in the UK. “The search involving the local Guardia Civil, mountain rescue helicopter, police dogs and experienced British ex-pat walkers has taken place.

Mrs Egglestone, along with their children, have been waiting anxiously for news of the former soldier. Mr Egglestone’s neighbours and friends back in the UK have said they have been praying for Michael’s safe return. They have described the well-liked family man as a ‘keen’ and ‘competent’ hiker, who would regularly make trips to the Lake District to indulge his love of hill-walking.
